meteorologist mike seidel is in oklahoma city this evening. >> reporter: on this christmas night, a massive storm is causing travel headaches for millions producing and dumping snow as far south as texas late this afternoon and still putting down rare christmas tornadoes in the deep south. look at this rain and wind. this is storm chaser video near mcneal, mississippi, where a tornado reportedly touched down this afternoon. there are reports of injuries and damage. and there is a rare christmas snowfall hitting dallas. it's bad news on the roads, signs warning of icy conditions. at least three reported tornadoes touched down across texas today causing lots of damage and leaving thousands without power. thunderstorm winds toppled this tree onto a pick-up truck in the houston area, killing the driver. no fatalities but plenty of clean-up this morning in oklahoma city following this massive pile-up. 21 cars and tractor-trailers crashed, slipping on roads coated with freezing rain. not just wind and ice, but snow is pounding parts of the west. in northern california, near lake tahoe, an avalanc

channel's mike seidel was in harrisburg this afternoon. >> reporter: for many in pennsylvania this is the third time they had to shovel snow this week, some picking up another 4 to 6 inches. over in philadelphia everyone for the first time in the season got a coating of white. >> reporter: as the storm continues to move north, the heaviest snowfall about 6 to 12 inches is expected to reach boston, cape cod, and providence, rhode island later this evening. and, kate, this storm did cut a wide swath through the country dumping rain and snow as it worked its way here into the northeast. now on average, we did see about an inch of snow in oklahoma and arkansas, about 6 inches in southern illinois, much of indiana. the heavier amounts are expected to happen tonight into new england. that's about 6 to 10 inches. the storm is moving fast. it's on its way to southern new england tonight. so if you're living near boston or to its east, do want to get your shovels ready. it will reach its peek near boston and cape cod and then fizzle out tomorrow around noon. but there is another storm

. thanks to mike who did so much to organize the event. he is an old friend. thank you, mike. i'm delighted to be here today with corbin. -- david corbin. we have two books that talk about robert byrd from different perspectives. my book is basically about the senate and the last great senate as i refer to it. senator byrd was the majority leader during the period of time i wrote about. it gives you an ensemble sense of how the senate works. the book originated in 2008. i had been in the senate in the 1970s and 1980s. by 2008, i decided the senate had become utterly unrecognizable to me. polarized and paralyzed, really quite dysfunctional. i decided to write a book about the senate when it was great, specifically when i was there.
